Occupying approximately 185,000 square feet of previously vacant buildings, the Downtown campus of Tidewater Community College is an important element in the revitalization of Downtown Norfolk, Virginia. In 1990, the Downtown 2000 Plan envisioned the Granby Street area as an ‘urban village’: an eclectic mix of retail, office, cultural, arts-oriented, entertainment, and educational uses. Tidewater Community College was the much needed catalyst to propel the development of this concept. It brought 8000 to 10,000 people into the area—bringing new life to Downtown Norfolk, not just during the business day, but through the evenings and weekends as well.
UDA teamed with Williams Tazwell and Associates to develop the architecture for new buildings like the Science Center, as well as the renovation of existing buildings like the Weldin Department Store into a new library. |
