Connecting Architecture & Placemaking to Create a New Town

UDA was commissioned by Disney Development Company to prepare community design and architectural guidelines for residential development in a new town called Celebration. Based on the best traditions of small towns found in the southeastern United States, the pattern book needed to allow for a wide range of house types and sizes – from rental apartments, to townhouses, to small lots with cottages, to very large estate lot houses – as well as pave the way for a welcoming, mixed-income community. UDA’s collaborative process led to design guidelines that emphasized scale and elements, making it possible to have a truly harmonious relationship among houses of different sizes and styles. As a result, the community has received national acclaim and set a new standard for the quality and character in a production scale. In short, Celebration helped establish the value of urbanism in new markets and transformed development paradigms for homebuilders and developers across the country for years to come.
