Old Dairy Community Center, Warm Springs, Virginia
The Old Dairy Community Center was created by adapting a collection of historic agricultural buildings for a new purpose — that of community center for Homestead Preserve. The vision for the transformation of these buildings entailed restoring key features and enhancing the overall qualities of the buildings so that they would best serve their new usages which include an assembly hall, post office, community offices, children’s recreational facilities, a pool, a spa, and health facilities. The Dairy Barn is a fine example of how reuse and reprogramming can transform underutilized structures into important and attractive community assets. UDA also created the master plan and pattern book for Homestead Preserve, an intensive preservation of 10,000 of an 11,000-acre valley in the Allegheny Highlands of Virginia.
