Uptown Charlotte is the focus of a remarkable renaissance. New residential neighborhoods are emerging in three of the four wards that comprise Uptown. The most exciting transformation is occurring in First Ward, where private and public investments are building a new mixed-income residential district and expanding the business and entertainment uses within Uptown. These efforts are part of the First Ward Plan, a strategy that focuses on the development of high-quality urban neighborhoods as the key to achieving a livable, pedestrian-friendly Uptown environment.
As part of the ongoing urban design effort, UDA prepared a Pattern Book for the Garden District, a residential precinct within the First Ward. The Garden District will have a mix of market-rate condominiums, townhouses, and detached single-family houses within a framework of new streets and block patterns. The architectural character builds on the patterns established in Dilworth and will act as a counterbalance with its lawns and park addresses to the more dense urban building character to the north.
