A federal grant was secured by the Borough of Kittanning to fund tourism and recreation improvements in the Downtown area. The borough asked UDA to help develop an overall urban design plan to link the Downtown to the waterfront along the picturesque Allegheny River. Working in a public process with the borough, downtown businesses, residents, and stakeholders, UDA developed a plan that called for strategic infill development and an improved network of streets, public open space, and an expanded waterfront park. The Kittanning Riverfront Park is the first phase of UDA’s Master Plan for the revitalization of Downtown. The park includes such water-specific amenities as a day marina for pleasure craft, a docking facility for large excursion and dinner fleets, and a public boat launch. Land-side amenities include an amphitheater for outdoor performances and events, open-air pavilions, memorial gardens, restrooms, parking, and an abundance of landscape and walks.
