The UDA Master Plan for Charlotte’s First Ward provides the framework for developing a dynamic new district in the heart of Charlotte that combines housing, shops, businesses, and institutions. This Uptown ward includes Tryon Street, the prime business address in Charlotte at one end, and a large inventory of vacant land and deteriorated properties surrounding a public housing project adjacent to the Tryon Street corridor, nearly one-quarter of Charlotte’s Uptown.
By capitalizing on the large inventory of vacant and publicly owned property, the Plan creates a new image and a clear development strategy for First Ward. In order to do this, the Plan defines a series of new districts with five new public spaces based on Charlotte’s fine tradition of parks and civic spaces.
The Master Plan designates a mix of development densities and the distinct character for each district to create diverse and complementary places.
