Preserving the unique character of a town

The fast-paced evolution of Downtown Riverhead on Long Island raised concerns about preserving the Town’s unique character while balancing the need for redevelopment. UDA created a Pattern Book to guide policies, set public-realm guidelines, and establish objective design standards for private development. Extensive engagement with residents and other stakeholders shaped the desired direction for downtown’s future, including adding a Town Square. The Town Square design physically and visually connected Main Street to the Peconic River and addressed vacancies, flooding, and disconnected pedestrian networks, with overwhelming support from developers, local government, and the community.
